This morning I saw a squirrel
He clambered down the wooden fence of my neighbor's
and down to the chain link fence around my yard
'Silly little squirrel' I thought
He walked across the fence better than a tightrope walker
and stopped in the middle
His body became motionless, but his tail twitched twice
- Twitch, twitch -
'Cute little squirrel' I thought
I sipped my coffee and watched him run across my lawn
He stopped at the metal ends to my clothesline and looked up
At the end of the pole rested my bird feeder
'Curious little squirrel' I thought
He tries to climb the pole, but his claws do not grip
I smile as he tries and tries some more
"No seed for you Mr. squirrel" I say "that's for the birds"
To my wonder, he goes for the nearest tree limb
He stopped at the edge and jumped for my line
The branches swayed wildly at his departure
He caught hold of my clothesline and climbed upside-down
I watched in open shock
'SMART little squirrel' I thought
After taking seed and nuts from the feeder, he jumped down
I watched him run the way he came and thought to myself
'I will have to double my efforts for tomorrow'
